Senator Hansen-Young (Greens) noted that environmental approval for many developments was cursory, and approval for new oil or gas mines didn’t take into account the larger picture of climate change, but just localised environmental effects. She suggested what was needed was a stonger environmental protection act which would require consideration of broader issues such as extinction level climate change.
Senator Tim Storer (Independent) agreed there was a need for strong environment legislation.
